The primary goal of this study is to investigate the present coastal management plans for blue carbon ecosystem management strategies using content analysis of the local plans of select municipalities in the Philippines. The analysis generated eight (8) clusters based on keywords focusing on mangrove and seagrass ecosystems, namely: ecological profile, ecosystem services, carbon sequestration, tourism, natural threats, anthropogenic threats, laws, policies, & ordinances, and management activities. The results of this study can serve as a benchmark for local policy-makers in updating their present management plans particularly in branching their focus on integrated management of seagrass ecosystems and advancing technical capacity and knowledge on blue carbon ecosystems.

Los vendedores ambulantes constituyen uno de los rasgos más característicos y posiblemente son los prestadores de servicios turísticos más numerosos en ciertas playas del Ecuador, sin embargo éstos han sido ignorados en las políticas y planos de manejo costero. A través del análisis cualitativo de entrevistas semi-estructuradas a ocho vendedores ambulantes, se identifica las condiciones sociales estructurales que afectan la práctica diaria del trabajo ambulante en cuatro playas turísticas de la costa Ecuatoriana. El análisis revela cómo la relación entre los vendedores y las entidades de gobierno facilitan procesos de asociación, auto organización y acción con los cuales los vendedores hacen frente a la incertidumbre e inestabilidad ocasionada por la falta de propuestas claras para el manejo de zonas de playa. El estudio además identifica tres aspectos claves que distinguen al ambulantaje en playas turísticas, del ambulantaje en otros espacios: la estacionalidad del trabajo, el conflicto que el turismo ha traído por la privatización del recurso playa, y las distinciones borrosas entre visitantes y residentes cuando los turistas se convierten en vendedores ambulantes para financiarse. Esta investigación aporta a la comprensión del ambulantaje en un contexto del manejo de playas turísticas y proporciona directrices para la política pública.

La comprensión de las diferentes condiciones que configuran el uso recreativo de las playas de arena es clave para su gestión. Este artículo explora el uso recreativo de visitantes y residentes de cuatro playas de arena en Ecuador en relación con el contexto físico y socioeconómico en el que se lleva a cabo este uso, incluida la morfodinámica de la playa, el nivel de desarrollo urbano, así como el tipo y la calidad de los servicios turísticos disponibles. Los resultados muestran que los visitantes y residentes utilizan la playa para las mismas actividades recreativas (es decir, caminar y nadar) en playas con diferentes morfologías y condiciones socioeconómicas. Sin embargo, los encuestados también indicaron que las características físicas (por ejemplo, el tamaño de la playa y el oleaje) son aspectos importantes para elegir una playa. Los visitantes de las playas rurales tienen más probabilidades de consumir servicios de catering informales ubicados dentro del área de la playa que los formales ubicados fuera. Este tema emergente en particular debe tomarse en consideración para futuras investigaciones sobre iniciativas de gestión en el contexto de los países en desarrollo.

This report on Marine spatial planning (MSP) offers coastal countries a tool to address current challenges. MSP provides spatial mapping of BES and the threats they face, bringing together diverse users in a participatory, holistic approach that promotes the mainstreaming of BES into goals for other economic sectors. It allows for trade-offs between different oceanic sectors to help build a more sustainable approach for the use of common resources.
