The aim of this World Bank report is to provide insights regarding the types of interventions governments have already implemented and policy considerations for supporting the recovery and resilience of the tourism sector going forward, particularly in light of structural demand and supply-side transformations precipitated or accelerated by Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The report studies the challenges for recovery faced by governments and the sector from the context of preexisting market and government failures that have been exacerbated by the crisis, as well as those emerging from the pandemic. The report includes several key findings and recommendations.

The Enhancing COVID-19 Preparedness for Tourism Recovery project will strengthen the capacity and readiness of Fiji to safely reopen to tourists and rebuild the country's economy following the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. By investing in communities’ reforestation efforts of their own land, Eden Projects empowers local people to decent employment and ensures their commitment to protecting the forests for generations to come. The project is also committed to prioritising skill-building and employment for women and single parents.

The Optimal Value Framework is a strategic approach that can be used to help destination stakeholders work together to understand and optimize the value of tourism for their community, agree on more balanced measures of success, and prioritize the impact areas most important for them to manage carefully and resource sufficiently. The framework helps identify the strategic levers that increase the benefits and minimize the cost or negative impacts of tourism to the destination.

A tool for ecosystem valuation based on small payments made by marine tourists for each animal sighting and transferred directly to coastal communities. Project piloting in Morotai, Indonesia to help make a new marine protected area (MPA) by working with three local dive operators and three communities that are located in the centre of the MPA, at the most critical areas. By financially rewarding the communities for wildlife sighted, the communities are committed to work in monitoring of the MPA, environmental restoration, education and development of women enterprises.
