This report attempts to demystify and define the blue economy for Caribbean policy-makers, a new concept being discussed within development circles and emerging as a new development paradigm for the sustainable development of our oceans and seas (Sustainable Development Goal 14) and particularly for the economic growth and development of ocean-facing countries, including Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

This report was drafted by a working group of United Nations entities, the World Bank, and other stakeholders to suggest a common understanding of the blue economy; to highlight the importance of such an approach, particularly for small island developing states and coastal least developed countries; to identify some of the key challenges its adoption poses; and to suggest some broad next steps that are called for in order to ensure its implementation.

This World Ocean Council report is the summary of the outcomes of a workshop on social license implications for the Blue Economy conducted at the Sustainable Ocean Summit in 2017.

The Coastal Capital series provides decision-makers in the Caribbean with information and tools that link the health of coastal ecosystems. WRI and its partners have conducted economic valuation studies of coral reefs and mangroves at national and subnational levels in 5 countries: Trinidad and Tobago, St. Lucia, Belize, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica and are using the results to identify and build support for policies that help to ensure healthy coastal ecosystems and sustainable economies.

This working paper looks at the benefits that coastal ecosystems provide to the Dominican Republic. The studies highlight the contribution of coastal ecosystems to the economy and the need for greater investment in protecting coastal and marine ecosystems, including better management of marine fisheries, protection of existing reserves, and enforcement of coastal development guidelines.
